B&W Photographs of Mid Century NYC $250
After serving in China during World War II, Charles returned to his hometown of New York City and studied photography under the GI bill. He enjoyed photographing NY scenes and helped to found the first photography gallery in Greenwich Village, NY in 1953 called the Limelight which showed the early stars of photography including Ansel Adams, Minor White, Edward Steichen, Bernice Abbot and Robert Frank among many others. Starting a family changed the focus of his work as he began to photograph his wife, a modern dancer, and his growing family of girls. The need for a regular income also cut down the time available for his artistic pursuits. However, he managed to squeeze a darkroom into the bathroom of the 14th St apartment, leaving just one other for a family of five and assorted pets. His kids were fascinated by the magic of photographs appearing in trays of liquid. He continued to document his life and surroundings for many years.
The images were printed and framed by Pitch Black Editions right here in West Concord.
Price: $250 each including matting and frame.
